World’s Toughest Mountain Bike Race

San Jose, Costa Rica - This year we celebrate the 15 year anniversary of La Ruta de los Conquistadors, otherwise known as the most difficult bike race on the planet, which will commence November 14, 2007.

La Ruta follows the same course taken by the Spanish Conquistadors of old, in their search for gold. Taking the Conquistadors 20 years to complete the journey from cost to cost. Today riders racing are given 4 days, facing over 300 miles of uninhabitable jungle. Making the journey from the pacific coast to the Caribbean coast a quest for survival to finish. Riders will face 9 microclimates, over 30,000 feet of elevation gain, the scorching sun, freezing rain on a volcanic climb, and whatever else mother nature has in store.

La Ruta, one of the most important Latin American bike race is open to both professionals and weekend warriors alike, bring together a large international field. “This is not just a race, but rather a quest of survival” Professional riders from all over the world come here to prove the ultimate point of, who’s the best.” Said Tinker Juarez.

The true spirit of the race is one of, survival. “There’s a lot of community on the race course,” says Mr. Roman Urbina Race Director, speaking of the spirit of the race. “It’s not about seconds or minutes on the course -- but the journey. Often people who are too focused on their own race miss the point.”

"It's not about how you feel in the beginning; it's about whether you can suffer for so long," Juarez told Sports Illustrated after the 2001 race. "As far as the races I've done, this is the toughest.

La Ruta de los Conquistadores guarantees to evoke every emotion imaginable, while pedaling 300 miles, over 30,000 feet of elevation change and managing 9 micro climates. While riders sustain the suffering they will enjoy a majestic Costa Rican landscape that few will ever know.
